Who we are
Amhara region is predominately an agricultural region. According to the regional
land use policy estimate (1993) the region's total area is 159,173 km2.
Out of which 27.2% cultivable, 30% for grazing, 14.7% forest and bush, 5.35% different
buildings and 19% water bodies. The region has 11 zones, 106 rural woredas and 9
town woredas in total there are 115 woredas and the total number of kebeles of the
region is 3,231.
Major ethnic and religion groups
Regarding ethnicity, most of the population (about 94%) is amhara whereas other
ethnic groups like awi, wag and oromo conistituent the rest 6%. On the other hand,
most of the people of the region (about 81%) are orthodox christian by religion.
18% of the population is muslim and the remaining 1% follows other different religions.
Boundary
The tigray region is found at the immediate north of the amhara region. This region
has a weather condition of 3.1% berha, 28.5% kola, 44.3% woynadega, 20.5% dega and
3.5% wurch. To the east of the amhara region,the afar region is found. On the other
hand, Oromia, Benching Goth and Sudan are found to the south, south west and west
of the amhara region.
